KSD shows it’s ‘Deaf’initely Connected with showcase event

Kentucky School for the Deaf is showcasing its technological advances and achievements over the years. Students, staff and visitors publicly celebrated those improvements Thursday afternoon with “DEAF”initely Connected.

“KSD should be very proud today,” said state Secretary of Education Helen Mountjoy, who was invited by students to speak at the ceremony.

She said the school should not only be proud of its history, “but because of things that are happening today.”

Thursday’s event did just that. Student-led tours of newly-renovated Walker and Kerr halls were given. Walker Hall serves as KSD’s elementary school; middle schoolers use the first level of Kerr l and the upper floor is the high school.

The two newest technological advances for the school are videophones and videoconferencing. Some KSD students demonstrated a videoconference session for the public Thursday.

Mountjoy said all the hard work over the years to ensure KSD students were getting the same instructional opportunities as other schools is paying off.

KSD junior Sandra Frank said technology for deaf people is obviously improving. It’s still unequal between the hearing and deaf, though, she said.

She said while hearing people can pay $20 for an alarm clock, deaf people must spend $70-$100 for one to suit their needs. She asked members in the crowd to raise their hands if they owned a Sidekick to text and e-mail, or a videophone, to communicate. She said not enough people have that technology because it’s expensive.

She said without technology, deaf people are left out of a lot of communicating, and KSD’s newer technology helps.

Barb Kibler, director of the deaf/hard of hearing and visually impaired state team, called Thursday a wonderful day for KSD. She asked the crowd to remember Bill Stearns and how proud he would be. Stearns was an employee of the Kentucky Department of Education who worked with KSD. He died at the end of last year.

“Bill Stearns’ love of this school and students … was something he lived every day,” she said. “I just wish he could see it.”

Kibler announced that KSD will receive $500 to purchase reading material in his honor.

“I think that’s exactly what Bill would want that money to do,” she added.

It also was announced that KSD will get another $200 for literacy material from the Parent-Teacher Cottage Association. As an ongoing tribute to Stearns, a plaque will be displayed in the library as well.
